1 Samuel 17 for Kids

For Kids · 5 min with a grown-up

A giant nobody can beat is scaring a whole army. Then a shepherd boy with a sling shows up — and reminds everyone how big God is.

Today's Story

The enemy army had a champion named Goliath — a GIANT, taller than any man, covered in armor from head to toe. Every day Goliath stomped out and roared, “Send someone to fight me!” And every day, all of God's soldiers shook with fear. Nobody was brave enough.

Then a shepherd boy named David came to bring food to his big brothers. He heard Goliath's roar — and he was puzzled. “Why is everyone so afraid? Who is this giant to make fun of the army of the living God?”

David told the king, “I'll fight him.” Everyone said, “You're just a boy!” But David said, “When a lion and a bear attacked my sheep, God helped me. God will help me now too.”

David didn't wear the king's heavy armor. He took just his shepherd's sling and five smooth stones from a stream. As Goliath laughed at him, David called out, “You come at me with a sword. But I come to you in the name of the Lord! The battle belongs to God!”

David ran toward the giant, swung his sling, and let a stone fly. It struck Goliath right on the forehead — and the giant fell down flat. With God's help, the shepherd boy had beaten the giant that nobody else would face.

And all of God's people learned it that day: it's not about how big YOU are. It's about how big your God is.

A Big Word

Memory Verse

Talk About It

  1. Everyone was scared of Goliath, but David remembered how big God is. What's a “giant” — a fear or a hard thing — in your life right now?
  2. David remembered how God had helped him before, with the lion and the bear. Can you remember a time God helped you? How does that help you trust Him now?
  3. David said, “The battle belongs to God.” What do you think that means for your giants?
