1 Samuel 24 for Kids

For Kids · 4 min with a grown-up

David finally has King Saul exactly where he wants him. What he chooses to do next will surprise everyone.

Today's Story

King Saul was hunting for David with three thousand soldiers. David and his men were hiding deep in a dark cave.

Then something incredible happened. Saul - the very king who was chasing David - walked into that exact cave, all alone, to rest. He had no idea David was hiding in the shadows just a few steps away.

David's men whispered, “This is your chance! Get him!”

David crept closer, quiet as a mouse. But he didn't hurt Saul. Instead, he silently cut off a tiny corner of Saul's robe and slipped back into the dark.

And even that made David feel bad. “I won't harm the king,” he told his men. “I'll let God take care of this.”

When Saul left the cave, David called out after him and held up the little piece of cloth. “See? I could have hurt you - but I didn't.” Saul was amazed. “You are kinder to me than I have been to you,” he said, and for that moment, the chasing stopped.

A Big Word

Talk About It

  1. David could have hurt Saul, but he chose mercy instead. Why is it so hard to be kind to someone who is being mean to us?
  2. David said he would let God take care of it. What does it mean to trust God instead of paying someone back?
  3. When Saul saw David's kindness, his heart softened. Have you ever seen kindness change how someone was acting?
