Once again David gets a chance to strike back at King Saul. Once again he has to decide: take it into my own hands, or trust God?
Today's Story
King Saul was chasing David again. One night, David looked down at Saul's camp from a hill. Everyone was fast asleep - even the guards. Right in the middle lay Saul, with his spear stuck in the ground next to his head.
David and his friend Abishai crept down into the sleeping camp, quiet as shadows.
“Let me get him!” Abishai whispered. “One quick move and it's over!”
“No,” David whispered back. “I won't hurt him. God will take care of Saul in His own way and His own time. That's not my job.”
So instead of hurting Saul, David simply picked up the king's spear and his water jug, and the two of them slipped back out of the camp.
From far away on the hilltop, David called out and held them up. “Look what I could have taken - you! But I didn't.” Once again, David had trusted God instead of paying Saul back. He believed that God rewards people who do what is right.
A Big Word

Talk About It
- Abishai wanted to strike right away, but David said no. When is it hardest for you to stop and not act on your anger?
- David trusted God to handle Saul. What does it feel like to let God take care of something instead of fixing it yourself?
- David took the spear and jug to show he'd been there but chose kindness. How can we show people we forgive them?
