Two men do something wrong and expect a prize for it. King David is about to teach them — and us — an important lesson.
Today's Story
There was still one man from Saul's family who could have been king instead of David. Two men decided to get rid of him in a wicked way — and then they hurried to David, sure he would be thrilled.
“Look what we did for you!” they said proudly. “Now there's no one in your way. Aren't you pleased?”
But David was not pleased. Not even a little. His face went serious.
“You think you've helped me?” he said. “You hurt someone who couldn't protect himself. That is wrong — and doing wrong is never the way to make something good happen.”
The men had expected a reward. Instead, David showed everyone that he would never cheer for cruelty, not even when it might help him become king faster. David trusted God to give him the crown the right way, in the right time.
A Big Word
Talk About It
- The men thought David would be happy with what they did. Why was he upset instead?
- Sometimes a wrong choice looks like a shortcut to something we want. Why is the shortcut not worth it?
- David waited for God to make him king the right way. When is it hard to wait and do things the right way?
