Deuteronomy 17 for Kids

For Kids · 3 min with a grown-up

Moses looks ahead to a day when God's people will have a king. He tells them the most important thing that king must do.

Today's Story

Moses helped God's people get ready for the future. He told them how to settle arguments fairly, with wise helpers who would listen carefully and always do what was right.

Then Moses said, “One day you will want a king to lead you.” And he told them what kind of king to choose — not a proud one who thought he was better than everyone, but a humble one who loved God.

Here was the most surprising part. Moses said the king must write out God's words in his very own book. And then he must read it every single day, his whole life long!

Why? So the king would always remember that God was the real King. So he would stay kind and humble, treat people fairly, and never think he was too important to obey God.

Isn't that wonderful? Even a king — the most powerful person in the whole land — needed to read God's words every day and let them lead him. If a king needs God's words that much, so do we.

A Big Word

Talk About It

  1. When is a time you read or heard a story from the Bible? What did you learn from it?
  2. God told the king to read His words every single day. What is one way our family could spend time with God's words each day?
  3. Even a powerful king stayed humble before God. Why do you think it's good to remember that God is bigger and wiser than we are?
