Deuteronomy 20 for Kids

For Kids · 3 min with a grown-up

God's people would face some scary times in their new land. Moses tells them the one thing to remember when they feel afraid.

Today's Story

Moses knew that one day God's people might have to stand up and fight to protect their home. That would feel very scary. Their hearts might pound!

So God gave them a special helper. Before anything hard happened, a leader would stand up in front of everyone and say: “Do not be afraid! The LORD your God is going with you. He will fight for you.”

Did you hear that? They were never alone. God Himself was right there with them.

Then God showed how kind He is. He said, “If anyone just built a new house, let him go home and enjoy it. If anyone just planted a garden, let him go home. And if anyone is feeling too scared, he can go home too.” God didn't force a frightened person to stay. How gentle is that?

God wanted His people to be brave. But their bravery didn't come from being big or strong. It came from knowing that God was with them.

A Big Word

Talk About It

  1. What is something that makes YOU feel scared? (The dark? Being alone? A big test?)
  2. How does it help to remember that God is with you, even when you feel afraid?
  3. God let scared people go home instead of forcing them. What does that show you about how kind God is?
