Deuteronomy 21 for Kids

For Kids · 3 min with a grown-up

Moses keeps teaching God's people how to be kind and fair. Today's rule is about caring — even when something isn't your fault.

Today's Story

Moses gave God's people lots of good rules to keep everyone cared for. Here is one of the most surprising ones.

God said: imagine something sad happened out in a field, and nobody knew who did it. No one saw. No one could explain it. It would be easy for everyone to shrug and say, “Well, that's not MY problem.”

But God didn't let His people do that. He said the leaders of the closest town should come out together. They would stand up and say, “We didn't do this, but we still care. We will not pretend we didn't notice.” Then they would ask God to make things right.

Isn't that amazing? God didn't want anyone to walk past a problem and ignore it. Even when it wasn't their fault, His people stopped, cared, and prayed.

God teaches us the same thing. When we see someone hurting, or something sad, we don't look away. We stop. We care. We help.

A Big Word

Talk About It

  1. Have you ever seen someone sad or hurt at school or the park? What did you do — or what could you do next time?
  2. Why is it easy to say “that's not my problem” and walk away? What does God want us to do instead?
  3. Who is someone who stops to care for YOU when you're having a hard day?
