Deuteronomy 26 for Kids

For Kids · 4 min with a grown-up

Moses taught God's people a beautiful way to say thank you — with a basket, a story, and a celebration.

Today's Story

God was bringing His people into a good land — a place where fruit would grow and fields would be full. And Moses taught them a special way to say thank you.

“When you gather your food,” Moses said, “take the very first of it — the first ripe fruit, the best you have — and put it in a basket. Bring that basket to God.”

Then the people would tell the story out loud, so they would never forget: “We were slaves in a far-away land. We cried out, and God heard us. With His strong hand, God led us out and brought us to this good land!”

After they told the story, Moses said, “Now celebrate! Be glad about all the good things God has given you. And don't celebrate alone — share your food with the people who have none, so everyone is happy together.”

What a happy way to thank God! Not with leftovers, but with the first and the best. Not with grumpy faces, but with a celebration. And not just for themselves, but sharing the good with everyone.

A Big Word

Memory Verse

Talk About It

  1. What is one good thing you are thankful for today? Have you told God thank you for it?
  2. God's people gave Him the FIRST and best of their food. What would it look like to give God your best, instead of your leftovers?
  3. The people shared their celebration with anyone who had no food. Who is someone you could share something good with this week?
