Deuteronomy 7 for Kids

For Kids · 4 min with a grown-up

Moses is giving God's people one last big talk before they go into their new home. Today he tells them a secret about why God picked them.

Today's Story

God's people were standing at the edge of a brand-new land — the good land God had promised them long ago. Moses gathered everyone close to talk.

“Do you know why God chose you?” Moses asked. “It wasn't because you were the biggest. You weren't! You were one of the smallest groups of all.”

The people listened. If it wasn't because they were big or strong or important… then why?

“God chose you because He loves you,” Moses said. “And because He keeps His promises. A long time ago He made a promise to your grandparents, and God always keeps His word.”

Then Moses gave them one important job. “In your new home you will meet people who pray to fake gods — little statues made of wood and stone. Those statues can't see or hear or help anyone. Keep your hearts only for the real God, the One who saved you and loves you.”

“Don't be afraid,” Moses added. “God is right here with you, and He is great and strong.”

A Big Word

Talk About It

  1. Has anyone ever picked you for something — a team, a turn, a special job? How did it feel to be chosen?
  2. Moses said God chose His people because He loves them, not because they were the best. Why is that good news for you too?
  3. God always keeps His promises. What is a promise someone has kept for you? How did it feel to be able to trust them?
