Isaiah 40 for Kids

For Kids · 4 min with a grown-up

After lots of hard messages, God says something so gentle here: “Comfort My people.” This whole chapter is a great big hug from God.

Today's Story

God's people were tired and sad. So God gave Isaiah the kindest message: “Comfort, comfort My people. Speak softly and gently to them. Tell them good news is coming.”

Then Isaiah showed them how big and strong God is. God can hold all the oceans in the cup of His hand! He can measure the whole sky with His fingers! He knows every single star - and He calls each one by name. Not one is missing.

And this huge, mighty God is gentle too. Isaiah said God is like a shepherd. He gathers the little lambs in His arms and holds them close to His heart. He carries the ones who are too small to keep up.

“Don't you know?” Isaiah said. “The Lord never gets tired. And when YOU are tired, He gives you strength.”

Then came the best promise of all: “Those who trust in the Lord will get new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not get tired.”

The God who names the stars is the same God who holds you close.

Talk About It

  1. What is something that makes you feel tired - your body, your heart, or both? God says He gives strength to the tired.
  2. God knows every star by name, AND He holds the little lambs close. Which part surprises you more - that He is so big, or that He is so gentle?
  3. The verse says those who trust God will “fly as high as eagles.” What do you think it feels like to have God give you new strength?
