Joshua 22 for Kids

For Kids · 4 min with a grown-up

A big misunderstanding almost causes a fight among God's people - until they stop and talk it out.

Today's Story

The tribes who had settled on the east side of the Jordan River said goodbye to head home. But before they crossed back, they built a huge altar by the river. When the other tribes heard about it, they got worried and upset! “Why did they build their own altar? Are they turning away from God?” They were so concerned they almost went to war over it!

But thankfully, they did the wise thing first: they sent leaders to ASK and find out the truth, instead of just attacking. “Why did you build this altar?” they asked.

And the eastern tribes explained: “Oh no, you misunderstood! We didn't build it to worship a different way. We built it as a REMINDER - a witness - so that no one would ever think we're not part of God's family. It's a sign that we ALL belong to the same Lord!”

“Oh!” said the others, relieved and glad. “That's wonderful!” The misunderstanding was cleared up, and instead of a fight, there was peace. They were one family again. When we don't understand something, it's wise to ask and talk it out, rather than jumping to angry conclusions.

A Big Word

Memory Verse

Talk About It

  1. The tribes almost fought over a misunderstanding. Why is it better to ask questions than to jump to angry conclusions?
  2. Talking it out brought peace instead of a fight. When have you cleared up a misunderstanding by talking?
  3. The altar was a sign they all belonged to the same Lord. How does it feel to be part of God's one big family?
