God gives Gideon a strange plan: win a huge battle with only a tiny army — so everyone knows it was GOD.
Today's Story
Gideon gathered an army of 32,000 men to face the huge enemy army. But God said something surprising: “You have TOO MANY men, Gideon!” Too many? “If you win with a big army,” God explained, “the people will brag, ‘We did it ourselves!’ I want them to know that I, the Lord, saved them.”
So God told Gideon to send home anyone who was afraid — and 22,000 men left! Then God said, “Still too many,” and narrowed it down until only 300 men were left. Just 300, against a giant army!
Then came the strangest battle plan ever. Instead of swords, each of the 300 men carried a trumpet and a clay jar with a torch hidden inside. In the night, they surrounded the enemy camp, BROKE the jars, held up the blazing torches, blew the trumpets, and shouted, “For the Lord and for Gideon!”
The noise and lights startled the huge enemy army so much that they panicked and ran away! God won the whole battle with just 300 men, trumpets, and torches. There was no doubt — only GOD could have done that!
A Big Word
Memory Verse
Talk About It
- God made Gideon's army SMALLER on purpose. Why do you think God wanted only a few men?
- God used trumpets and torches instead of swords. Why does God sometimes use weak or surprising things?
- God wanted everyone to know HE won the battle. Why is it important to give God the glory?
