Judges 8 for Kids

For Kids · 4 min with a grown-up

After his great victory, Gideon stays humble in one way — but makes a mistake we can learn from.

Today's Story

After God gave Gideon the amazing victory with just 300 men, the people were so grateful that they wanted to make Gideon their king. “Rule over us!” they said. But Gideon said something wise and humble: “No, I will not rule over you, and my son won't either. The LORD will rule over you!” Gideon knew that GOD was the true King, not him. That was a good and humble choice.

But then Gideon made a mistake. He collected gold and made a special golden object, and over time, the people started treating it almost like an idol — giving it the honor that belongs only to God. What started as something special slowly pulled people's hearts away from worshiping God alone.

It's a reminder for us: even good things can become a problem if we let them take God's place in our hearts. God alone deserves our worship. Nothing else — not gold, not stuff, not even good things — should ever come before Him.

Keep God first. Let nothing take His place in your heart. He alone is worthy of all our love and worship.
