Leviticus 16 for Kids

For Kids · 4 min with a grown-up

God gave His people one very special day every single year — a day to be made clean and close to Him again.

Today's Story

Sometimes we do wrong things. We say something unkind, or we don't obey, or we hurt a friend. When that happens, it can feel like a wall goes up between us and the people we love. The Bible says wrong things can put a wall like that between us and God too.

But God loves His people so much that He did not leave the wall standing. He gave them one very special day, every year, just for getting the wall taken down. On that day, everyone would stop and be still and remember God together.

God chose one helper, the high priest, to go into the most special room in God's tent — the room where God was close. The high priest came carefully, to say sorry to God for all the people and to ask God to make them clean.

There were two goats that day. One helped show that the people were made clean. The other goat was sent far, far away into the empty desert — a picture of all the wrong things being carried away, gone, so they would not stand between the people and God anymore.

When the day was over, the people were made clean and close to God again. What a gift — a fresh start, given by God Himself.

A Big Word

Talk About It

  1. Think of a time you did something wrong and then said sorry. How did it feel afterward when everything was okay again?
  2. One goat carried the wrong things far, far away into the desert. How does it feel to know God can take our wrong things away like that?
  3. God wanted to be close to His people, not far away. What helps you feel close to God?
