Luke 5 for Kids

For Kids · 4 min with a grown-up

After fishing all night and catching nothing, Peter is about to have the most surprising morning of his life.

Today's Story

One morning by the lake, Jesus was teaching huge crowds. He climbed into Peter's fishing boat and asked him to push out a little from shore, so everyone could hear.

When Jesus finished, He said to Peter, “Now row out to the deep water and let down your nets for a catch.” Peter was tired. “Master, we worked hard all night and caught nothing. But because You say so, I'll let down the nets.”

And WOW — when they did, the nets filled with so many fish that they began to break! They had to call another boat, and both boats were so full they nearly sank! Peter had never seen anything like it.

Peter fell down before Jesus. “Go away from me, Lord — I'm a sinful man!” But Jesus said kindly, “Don't be afraid. From now on, you will catch people!” Jesus was inviting Peter to a brand-new life of following Him and bringing people to God.

So Peter and his partners pulled their boats up on shore, left everything, and followed Jesus.

A Big Word

Memory Verse

Talk About It

  1. Peter caught nothing all night, but everything changed when he obeyed Jesus. Why is it worth listening to Jesus even when we're tired or doubtful?
  2. Jesus told Peter, “Don't be afraid.” What might Peter have been afraid of? What are you sometimes afraid of?
  3. Peter left everything to follow Jesus. What does it look like to follow Jesus in your life?
