On His last night, Jesus shares a special meal with His friends and prays a brave, hard prayer in a garden.
Today's Story
It was almost time for Jesus to give everything for us. On His last night, He shared a special supper with His twelve friends.
During the meal, Jesus took bread, thanked God, broke it, and gave it to them. “This is My body, given for you,” He said. Then He took a cup and said, “Whenever you eat and drink this, remember Me.” (That's why, even today, families and churches share bread and a cup to remember Jesus.)
After supper, Jesus went to a quiet garden called Gethsemane to pray. He knew hard things were coming, and His heart was very heavy and sad. He fell to the ground and prayed, “Father, everything is possible for You. Yet not what I want — what YOU want.” Even when it was so hard, Jesus chose to obey His Father, out of love for us.
Then men came to the garden to arrest Jesus and take Him away. Jesus didn't run or fight. He let them take Him, because this was the way He would save us. He was doing it all on purpose — out of love.
It was the start of the hardest, holiest night. But every step, Jesus was choosing love.
A Big Word
Memory Verse
Talk About It
- Jesus gave us bread and a cup so we'd remember Him. How does your family remember Jesus and His love?
- In the garden, Jesus prayed, “Not what I want, but what You want.” That's a brave prayer! When is it hard to want what God wants?
- Jesus let Himself be taken, on purpose, out of love. How does it feel to know Jesus did the hardest thing for YOU?
