This is the hard, holy day — the day Jesus gave His life for us. We'll tell it gently.
Today's Story
Jesus had done nothing wrong, but the leaders handed Him over to be put on a cross. Even though He was innocent, the soldiers mocked Him, and they led Him up a hill to be crucified between two criminals.
It was a sad, sad day. People walked by and made fun of Him. But Jesus stayed there, because He was doing it on purpose — for us.
At noon, the whole sky went dark for three hours, in the middle of the day. And then Jesus gave a loud cry and breathed His last. He had given everything.
At that very moment, something amazing happened: the great curtain in the temple — the one that separated people from the Most Holy Place where God's presence was — ripped in two, from top to bottom! It was as if God was saying, “Now the way to Me is wide open. Because of Jesus, anyone can come close to Me.”
A soldier standing there, watching it all, said in wonder, “Surely this man was the Son of God!”
That evening, a kind man named Joseph gently laid Jesus' body in a tomb cut from rock. Jesus' friends were heartbroken. It looked like the end. But Jesus had opened the way to God — and Sunday was coming.
A Big Word
Memory Verse
Talk About It
- Jesus stayed on the cross on purpose, for us. How does it feel to know He did that out of love for YOU?
- When Jesus died, the temple curtain ripped open. What do you think God was showing us — that now anyone can come close to Him?
- Even a soldier said, “This was the Son of God!” Who do you say Jesus is?
