Matthew 27 for Kids

For Kids · 4 min with a grown-up

This is the saddest part of the story — but also the most loving. Jesus gives His life because He loves us so much.

Today's Story

After the garden, Jesus was taken to be judged, even though He had done nothing wrong. Some people were unkind to Him, but Jesus didn't fight back. He was brave and gentle through it all.

Jesus was put on a cross — the way the Romans punished people. It was a very sad and painful day. But here's the amazing thing: Jesus chose to do it. He could have called thousands of angels to rescue Him, but He stayed, out of love. He was taking the punishment for all the wrong things people have ever done, so that we could be forgiven and be God's friends forever.

As Jesus died, the bright afternoon sky turned dark, and the ground shook. Even a Roman soldier who was watching said, “This man really was the Son of God!”

Jesus' friends were heartbroken. A kind man named Joseph gently laid Jesus' body in a tomb cut into the rock, and a big stone was rolled in front.

It seemed like the saddest ending ever. But it was NOT the end. Jesus had promised that something wonderful was coming on Sunday morning…
