Proverbs 10 for Kids

For Kids · 3 min with a grown-up

Proverbs is a book of short, wise sayings. King Solomon wrote many of them.

Chapter 10 is full of these little sayings - just one or two lines each - that teach you how to live well.

Today's Story

Imagine sitting next to a wise old grandfather. He doesn't tell you one long story. Instead, he hands you little sayings, one at a time, like small bright stones to keep in your pocket.

“Working hard,” he says, “is like filling a basket in the summer so you have food for winter. Being lazy is like sleeping while the work waits.”

“When you tell the truth,” he says, “your words are like fresh, clean water that everyone wants to drink. But mean or untrue words just make a mess.”

“A wise person,” he says with a smile, “doesn't blurt out every single thing. They think first. The more you talk without thinking, the more likely you are to say something you wish you hadn't.”

And the kindest one of all: “When you love people, you cover over their little mistakes instead of pointing at every one.”

Pocket those wise little stones. Pull one out whenever you need it.

Talk About It

  1. The grandfather says honest words are like clean, fresh water. How do you feel when someone tells you the truth and you know you can trust them?
  2. One saying is “think before you talk.” Can you remember a time you said something too fast and wished you hadn't? What could you do next time?
  3. Working hard now is like filling a basket for later. What is a job you can do today that your future self will be glad you finished?
