Proverbs 29 for Kids

For Kids · 3 min with a grown-up

Proverbs 29 is full of more short, wise sayings from God.

A big one in this chapter is learning to stay calm instead of blowing up when we get mad.

Today's Story

Have you ever felt so mad that you wanted to yell, or stomp, or slam a door? Everybody feels that way sometimes. Proverbs 29 talks about what to do with those big feelings.

It says that a foolish person lets all of their anger come pouring out, like a soda bottle that gets shaken up and explodes everywhere. But a wise person learns to hold it in and calm down first. They take a breath. They wait. And the angry feeling gets smaller.

This doesn't mean you pretend you're not upset. It means you don't let the upset feeling boss you around. You stay in charge of you.

The chapter also says that listening to your mom and dad and the grown-ups who love you makes your home a happy place. And it says it's smart to be patient and slow to get angry, instead of quick and grumpy.

God knows we all get mad. He's not surprised by it. He just wants to help us be the boss of our big feelings instead of letting them be the boss of us.

Talk About It

  1. The chapter compares blowing up to a shaken soda exploding. What does your body feel like right before you get really mad?
  2. What is one thing you can do to calm down when you feel angry - take a breath, count to ten, walk away for a minute?
  3. Why do you think staying calm is called being “wise” instead of just being quiet?
