Psalms 13 for Kids

For Kids · 3 min with a grown-up

Psalm 13 is a short song King David sang when he was tired of waiting and feeling sad - and it shows how a sad heart can turn glad.

Today's Story

Have you ever had to wait a really long time for something, until it felt like it would never, ever come? That is just how King David felt when he wrote this little song.

He started with a question he asked four whole times: “How long, Lord? How long? How long? How long?” “How long will I feel sad like this? It feels like You have forgotten me!” David was tired of waiting, and he told God all about it.

Then David asked God for help. “Look at me, Lord. Answer me. Light up my eyes again,” he prayed - which is a way of saying, “Help me feel happy and awake inside again.”

And here is the amazing part. Right in the middle of feeling sad, David made a choice. “But I trust in Your love,” he sang. He decided to remember that God loved him, even while he was still waiting.

And do you know what happened to David's heart? It turned glad. By the end of the song he was singing: “I will sing to the Lord, because He has been so good to me.” The very same song that started out sad ended up happy.

Talk About It

  1. What is something you are waiting for right now? Does the waiting feel easy or hard?
  2. David told God exactly how sad he felt, and that was okay. Why do you think it helps to tell God when you feel sad?
  3. David chose to trust God's love even before things got better. What is one true thing about God you could remember the next time you feel sad?
