Psalms 131 for Kids

For Kids · 3 min with a grown-up

Psalm 131 is one of the shortest songs in the whole Bible. King David wrote it. It is a quiet song about feeling calm and safe with God.

Today's Story

King David had a busy, important job. There were a lot of big things he could have worried about all day long.

But in this little song, David says something surprising. He says, “Lord, my heart is not proud. I do not try to figure out things that are too big for me.”

David is saying: there are some questions that are just too big for me. And that is okay. I do not have to understand everything. I can let God be in charge of the big things.

Then David gives us the sweetest picture in the whole song. He says his heart is calm and quiet, like a little child who has just had a good meal and is resting safely in its mother's arms.

Think about that. A baby who is full and warm and being held does not worry. The baby is not in charge of dinner or bedtime or anything at all. The baby just rests, because someone bigger is taking care of everything.

That is how David felt with God. Not worried. Not fussy. Just calm and quiet and safe.

And at the end he tells everyone, “Put your hope in the Lord!”

A Big Word

Talk About It

  1. What is a big worry you have been carrying lately? Could you hand that one over to God and let Him be in charge of it?
  2. David says he feels calm like a child being held by a parent. When do you feel the most safe and calm?
  3. Is there a big question you do not understand yet? How does it feel to know God understands it, even when you do not?
