Psalms 20 for Kids

For Kids · 3 min with a grown-up

Psalm 20 is a song the people sang to cheer on their king, King David, before he had to do something really hard. It is a prayer you sing OVER someone you love.

Today's Story

The king had a big, hard day coming. Everyone could see he was worried. So all the people gathered around him to do the best thing they knew how to do - they prayed for him out loud.

They sang, “May the Lord answer you when you are in trouble. May He send you help. May He give you the desire of your heart.” It was like a giant group hug made out of words.

The people knew the king would soon be standing in front of huge problems. Some of those problems looked big and strong, like horses and chariots rolling toward him. But the people remembered something more important.

They sang, “Some trust in chariots. Some trust in horses. But we trust in the name of the Lord our God.” Horses can get tired. Chariots can break. But God never tires and never breaks.

So they didn't put their hope in big strong things. They put their hope in their big strong God. And they cheered, “Lord, save the king! Answer us when we call!”

Talk About It

  1. The people prayed for their king before his hard day. Who do YOU know that has something hard coming up that you could pray for?
  2. Some people trust in big strong things like horses and chariots. What are some things people today trust in instead of God?
  3. How does it feel when someone tells you, “I'm praying for you”?
