Zechariah 9 for Kids

For Kids · 4 min with a grown-up

This chapter holds one of the most famous promises in the whole Bible — about a gentle King who would come riding on a donkey.

Today's Story

God promised His people that He would watch over them and keep them safe, like a strong shield wrapped all around them. They did not need to be afraid.

And then God gave the most wonderful promise of all. Listen closely, because this one is special.

God said, “Cheer and shout for joy! Look — your King is coming to you! He is good and kind. He comes to save you. And He is gentle and humble, riding on a donkey, on a little baby donkey.”

Think about that. A king could come on a giant warhorse, with loud trumpets, to show how big and scary he is. But not this King. This King would come softly, riding a gentle little donkey, so everyone could see how kind He was.

And many, many years later, that is exactly what happened. Jesus rode into the city of Jerusalem on a donkey, just like God promised. The people waved branches and shouted for joy!

God promised this gentle King would bring peace to the whole world — peace that reaches from one end of the earth to the other.

What a kind and gentle King to wait for.

Memory Verse

Talk About It

  1. When have you been gentle with something soft, like a pet or a baby? Jesus the King is gentle like that with you. How does that feel?
  2. The King could have come on a big scary horse, but He chose a little donkey instead. What does that tell you about what Jesus is like?
  3. When Jesus rode in on the donkey, people cheered and shouted for joy. What is something about Jesus that makes you happy?
