Lamentations 3:40 Meaning and Explanation

Now the voice becomes a summons, and notice it becomes 'us' — the sufferer joins himself to his people in the call. 'Let us search and try our ways.' Rather than complaining outward, the response to suffering is to look inward, to examine honestly how we have lived. This searching is the first step of true repentance, an unflinching look at one's own ways.

'And turn again to the LORD.' Self-examination is not meant to end in mere regret but in return. The whole point of searching the ways is to find what has led us from God so that we may come back to him. This is the heart's response to rediscovered mercy: not to wallow in guilt nor to excuse it, but to turn — to come home to the God whose compassions fail not.
