What Does Haggai 1:5 Mean?
This short command interrupts the people's routine with a call to honest reflection. Literally it means to ‘set your heart upon your ways’—to take stock of how life is actually going. Coming after the charge about neglecting the temple, it invites the hearers to trace the connection between their spiritual priorities and their daily frustrations.
God does not merely scold; He calls His people to think. ‘Consider your ways’ is an invitation to self-examination rather than a verdict pronounced over them. Before the heart can be moved, it must be made to see. There is mercy in being asked to stop and look honestly at the pattern of one's days—for the One who asks the question already knows the answer, and means to lead His people back to fruitfulness.
