What Does Luke 19:12 Mean?
The hearers knew this plot from life. After the death of Herod, his son Archelaus traveled to Rome to be confirmed as ruler of Judea, and his rebuilt palace stood in Jericho itself, where Jesus is speaking. Kingship in that world was received in a distant capital and exercised on return.
Jesus casts himself as the nobleman. He will soon depart, not to Rome but through death, resurrection, and ascension, to receive a kingdom, and he will return to reign. The kingdom does not appear immediately, as the crowd hopes, yet its coming is as certain as the journey of the king.
