What Does Luke 21:11 Mean?
From human conflict Jesus turns to creation itself: great earthquakes in place after place, famines, pestilences, terrors, and great signs from heaven. The decades that followed brought all of these, and the centuries since have repeated them.
Even the ground underfoot and the sky overhead join the account of a world in travail. Yet the Lord who lists these terrors does so to prepare, not to frighten; every item on the list is a thing he already knows. When the earth shakes, the believer's hope does not stand on the earth. It stands on the God who foretold the shaking and promised redemption on the far side of it (Luke 21:28).
