What Does Luke 22:41 Mean?
He goes just far enough to be alone, yet near enough to be seen and heard - close to the disciples whose strength he had urged, alone with the Father whose will he came to do. Kneeling, he begins the most solemn prayer in Scripture.
The distance is itself a picture: there were depths that night into which no friend could accompany him (Isaiah 63:3). Every soul has its stone's cast - the place where, finally, it is just you and God. Jesus consecrated that place. Because he knelt there alone, no one who kneels there now is ever truly alone (Hebrews 4:15-16).
