What Does Luke 22:71 Mean?
The verdict comes with relief: his own words supply the charge. By their reading of the law, his claim deserved death (Leviticus 24:16); the possibility that he was telling the truth is never weighed. The trial ends having established the one fact that matters - who Jesus says he is.
Their sentence is built on his testimony, and so, in a wholly different way, is the church's faith: the self-witness that condemned him is the confession that saves (Romans 10:9). Everyone who reads this Gospel has now 'heard of his own mouth.' What the council did with that testimony is recorded; what the reader does with it is still being written.
