What Does Luke 24:31 Mean?
In the breaking of the bread the veil lifts: their eyes are opened, and they know him — and in that instant he vanishes from their sight. The eyes that had been holden (Luke 24:16) are now opened.
Recognition of Christ is given, and given in God's moment. Yet as soon as they truly see him, sight is withdrawn — for faith, not constant sight, will carry them from here. His vanishing does not undo the revelation; they will walk seven miles in the dark on the strength of it. One true glimpse of the risen Christ reorders everything.
