What Does Luke 24:48 Mean?
Jesus turns from the plan to the people who will carry it: ye are witnesses of these things. These men and women have seen the living Lord, heard him, watched him eat; their calling is to tell what they have seen (Acts 1:8).
A witness does not invent or embellish; a witness tells the truth about what happened. The church was built on exactly that — ordinary people saying we saw him, and holding to it at any cost. The calling has not lapsed: those who have come to know the risen Christ are entrusted with saying so, plainly, with lives that agree with their words.
