What Does Luke 3:17 Mean?
John reaches for the harvest floor. After threshing, a farmer tossed the grain into the evening breeze with a wooden fork: the full kernels fell back to the floor, and the husks blew aside to be swept up and burned.
The Messiah comes to such a floor. His arrival divides what threshing has loosened, and the dividing line runs by weight, the substance of a life rather than its show. Yet notice where the labor aims: the garner. Gathering wheat is the goal of the whole harvest; the fire only clears away what never was grain. To belong to him is to be gathered, kept, and stored safe in the owner's barn.
