What Does Luke 3:18 Mean?
Luke closes his sample of John's preaching with a summary. The warnings, the demands, and the answers given to crowds, publicans, and soldiers were only a fraction of a much longer ministry beside the Jordan.
The striking touch is Luke's verb: all of it, axe and fire included, he calls preaching good news. Honest warning is a mercy when it turns people toward rescue, and every hard word John spoke was a signpost pointing to Christ.
