What Does Mark 15:8 Mean?
A crowd swells at the judgment seat, calling for the yearly amnesty. They come for the custom, not necessarily for Jesus; many in the throng may not yet know that the prisoner whose fate hangs on their voices is the teacher from Nazareth.
Mark shows how quickly a request for mercy can be bent toward condemnation. Days earlier pilgrim voices had shouted Hosanna at his entry (Mark 11:9); now other voices, guided by other shepherds, will cry for something darker. The scene is a sober mirror. We become what we cry out for, and the loudest voice nearby is not always the truest. Wisdom asks whose voice we are echoing before we raise our own.
