What Does Matthew 10:40 Mean?
After the hard call to take up the cross, Jesus turns to the dignity of those who are sent. To receive the disciples is to receive him, and to receive him is to receive the Father who sent him. An unbroken chain of welcome runs from the messenger to the Master to God.
The sent ones carry the very presence of the One who sends them. How a person treats Christ's messengers is how he treats Christ, and how he treats Christ is how he treats the Father. This lends great weight to the smallest act of hospitality toward a disciple, and great comfort to the disciple, who knows that in being received he brings his Lord into the home that opens to him.
