What Does Matthew 22:12 Mean?
The king's address is courteous -- "Friend" -- and his question simple: how did you come in like this? The man "was speechless," literally muzzled. He offers no excuse because there is none; the garment could have been his, and he would not put it on.
Before the King, every covering of self-justification falls away. The man is not faulted for being found on the highways -- that is how he was invited -- but for despising the dress of the feast while enjoying its food. The verse invites self-examination rather than speculation: when the King comes in, what am I wearing -- my own way, or what He has provided?
