What Does Matthew 22:45 Mean?
Jesus presses the point home: David's Lord cannot be only David's son. The question does not deny the Messiah's descent from David -- the genealogy of Jesus opens this very Gospel (Matthew 1:1) -- it reveals that sonship is not the whole truth.
The Christ is both: David's son by birth, David's Lord in glory -- "made of the seed of David according to the flesh, and declared to be the Son of God with power" (Romans 1:3-4). The Messiah the Pharisees expected was too small, a national champion in David's mold. Jesus invites them to a larger hope, standing in front of them. Every heart faces the same enlargement: Christ is always more than we had thought.
