What Does Matthew 26:1 Mean?
This verse closes the long teaching of chapters 24 and 25, given on the Mount of Olives. Matthew marks the end of each of the five great discourses of this Gospel with the phrase, when Jesus had finished; here he adds all these sayings, signaling that the public teaching of Jesus is complete.
Nothing now remains but the work itself. The Teacher has spoken of watchfulness, of talents, of sheep and goats; now He rises to live what He taught, loving His own to the end. When the words of Christ are finished, His greatest sermon begins -- the offering of Himself.
