Matthew 26:23 Meaning and Explanation

At Passover, companions dipped bread and herbs into shared bowls. Jesus narrows the circle without speaking a name: the betrayer is a man whose hand has shared His dish -- an intimate, not a stranger. The words echo Psalm 41:9, the familiar friend who lifted up his heel.

The wound is the nearness. Scripture had long foretold that the Anointed would suffer treachery from a friend, and Jesus knowingly receives it at His own table. He has tasted the particular grief of intimate betrayal; no one wounded that way grieves alone.
