What Does Matthew 26:35 Mean?
Peter raises his vow to its height: even dying with Jesus would not make him deny Him. The other disciples, emboldened, all join the pledge. Eleven voices promise faithfulness unto death.
They mean it -- and within hours they will all flee. Sincerity is not strength. The gap between what love intends and what flesh performs is one of the central lessons of this night, and Jesus lets their words stand without rebuke, knowing the men they will later become by His grace.
