What Does Matthew 26:36 Mean?
Gethsemane was an olive grove at the foot of the Mount of Olives; the name means oil press. Jesus has the disciples sit while He goes farther in to pray -- His unvarying refuge before every great hour.
In the place of the press, the Son of God begins to be pressed. He meets the approaching cross the way He has met everything: in prayer to His Father. Where the first garden saw man hide from God among the trees, in this garden the obedient Son goes seeking Him.
