Taking Peter, James, and John, Jesus begins to be sorrowful and deeply distressed.

What Does Matthew 26:37 Mean?

Jesus takes the same three who saw His transfiguration -- Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, James and John. The men who beheld His glory on one mountain are now asked to behold His anguish in a garden. Sorrow and heaviness begin to break over Him in their sight.

He lets His friends see Him grieved. The Lord who healed multitudes now asks for companionship in His own dark hour, dignifying forever the human need for friends in suffering. Witnesses of glory must also be witnesses of agony, or they will not truly understand either one.
