What Does Matthew 26:5 Mean?
Jerusalem at Passover swelled with pilgrims, and many regarded Jesus as a prophet. The council therefore plans to delay the arrest until the crowds disperse, lest a riot break their grip on the city.
Their timetable does not hold. Jesus dies at Passover after all, exactly as He said two verses earlier -- the Lamb given at the feast of lambs. Human schemers set their calendars, but the timing of redemption was never theirs to choose. God appoints the hour, and the hour is full of meaning.
