What Does Matthew 26:65 Mean?
Caiaphas tears his garments -- the prescribed reaction to blasphemy -- and announces that no more witnesses are needed: the court has heard the claim from the mouth of the accused. The failed case is suddenly closed.
The tearing of robes was grief at dishonor done to God; the tragedy is that God was being dishonored in that room, but not by the prisoner. The charge of blasphemy is true only if Jesus is not who He says He is. Everything, then and now, turns on that question.
