His fame spreads beyond Galilee into all Syria, and crowds bring him the afflicted -- those with various diseases and torments, the demon-oppressed, those out of their minds, the paralyzed. Matthew piles up the categories to show the full range of human suffering laid before Jesus. To each kind of misery the verse gives the same end: "and he healed them."
No condition is named here that overmatches his power. The brokenness of body and mind, and even those held by dark powers, all give way before him. The plain words "he healed them" carry enormous comfort: there is no ailment beyond his compassion or his ability. People simply brought their suffering to Jesus, and he met it. That remains the invitation -- to bring our afflictions to him.
