What Does Matthew 8:32 Mean?
Jesus speaks one word: 'Go.' At His command the spirits come out of the men and enter the herd. The whole herd then rushes headlong down the steep bank into the sea and is drowned. The men are free, and the destructive nature of what had bound them is laid bare.
The single word of authority is all it takes; the same voice that calmed the storm now frees the captives. The wild plunge of the swine shows what these powers intend, ruin and death wherever they reign. The two tormented men, however, are delivered and restored. In Christ's brief command the whole contest is decided. He needs no struggle to overcome evil; His word is enough, and at it the prisoners go free.
