What Does Obadiah 1:7 Mean?
Edom had relied on treaties and alliances for safety. Here those very partners turn against her: friends escort her to the border to expel her, those who shared her table set a trap beneath her feet. The betrayal she once dealt to her brother now returns through her own confederates.
There is a fitting irony, for Edom was famous for its wise men, yet there is none understanding in him. Worldly cleverness and political alliances cannot save when God has spoken. The verse gently warns the reader that trust placed in human strength and shrewdness will fail; only what rests on God stands secure when everything else gives way.
