What Does Obadiah 1:8 Mean?
Edom and its region were celebrated in the ancient world for counsel and wisdom. God poses a rhetorical question that expects the answer yes: in that day He Himself will remove the very wisdom that was Edom's pride, leaving the mount of Esau without insight in its hour of need.
When wisdom is divorced from the fear of the Lord, it cannot save the one who holds it. God can simply withdraw it. The reader is reminded that true understanding begins not in human brilliance but in reverence toward God, and that gifts used to serve pride are gifts that can be taken away.
