Psalm 118:6 Meaning and Explanation

This verse is a ringing declaration of courage built on a single conviction: "The LORD is on my side." Because God is with him and for him, the psalmist draws a fearless conclusion: "I will not fear." The decision against fear is deliberate, an act of faith that flows directly from knowing whose side God is on.

The rhetorical question that follows ("what can man do unto me?") is not naive. The psalmist knows that people can do real harm; the rest of the psalm describes enemies who compassed him about and pushed hard against him. But the question puts human threat in proper perspective. Whatever others may do, it is limited and small compared to the God who stands with him. If the LORD is on his side, no human opposition can have the final word. This is the logic of biblical courage: the presence of God rather than the absence of danger. The verse trains the heart to weigh threats correctly, to measure them against the One who is greater than any opponent. It is no surprise that the New Testament takes up this very verse to encourage believers facing hardship. Where God is on our side, fear loses its grip and confidence takes its place.
